Today's reading assignment is 1 Sam. 15-20, 28, 31. Friday of last week we read 1 Sam. 7-10, 12 just click to read if you missed it.
We read about Samuel subduing the Philistines at Mizpah, and how Israel asked for a king. Now this angered Samuel but the LORD told him that it wasn't the people rejecting him, they were rejecting the LORD, and here is what He tells Samuel...8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do." So Samuel does just what the LORD tells him to do, but the people don't care they want to be like all the other nations (vs. 19).
Next we read about Samuel annointing Saul a Benjamite and here is what the LORD tells Samuel...Now the day before Saul came, the LORD had revealed this to Samuel: 16 "About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him leader over my people Israel; he will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked upon my people, for their cry has reached me." Saul is annointed by Samuel and made King, then he gives his farwell speech where he goes into detail about how they have angered the LORD by asking for a King. Then Samuel calls upon the LORD and here is what happens...18 Then Samuel called upon the LORD, and that same day the LORD sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe of the LORD and of Samuel. The people then, of course, ask Samuel to pray to the LORD so that they won't die and here is what Samuel says to them...20 "Do not be afraid," Samuel replied. "You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 22 For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own. 23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. 25 Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will be swept away."
Today's inspirational quote is...
"Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination. "
